Absolute Timing of the Crab Pulsar with RXTE

چکیده
We have monitored the phase of the main X-ray pulse of the Crab pulsar with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) for almost eight years, since the start of the mission in January 1996. The absolute time of RXTE’s clock is sufficiently accurate to allow this phase to be compared directly with the radio profile. Our monitoring observations of the pulsar took place bi-weekly (during the periods when it was at least 30 degrees from the Sun) and we correlated the data with radio timing ephemerides derived from observations made at Jodrell Bank. We have determined the phase of the X-ray main pulse for each observation with a typical error in the individual data points of 50 μs. The total ensemble is consistent with a phase that is constant over the monitoring period, with the X-ray pulse leading the radio pulse by 0.0102±0.0012 period in phase, or 344±40 μs in time. The error estimate is dominated by a systematic error of 40 μs in the radio data, arising from uncertainties in the variable amount of pulse delay due to interstellar scattering and instrumental calibration. The statistical error is 0.00015 period, or 5 μs. The separation of the main pulse and interpulse

Timing accuracy of the Swift X-Ray Telescope in WT mode
Context. The X-Ray Telescope (XRT) on board Swift was mainly designed to provide detailed position, timing and spectroscopic information on gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows. During the mission lifetime the fraction of observing time allocated to other types of source has been steadily increased. Aims. In this paper, we report on the results of the in-flight calibration of the timing capabilitie...

In this paper we present some preliminary result on the spectral and timing analysis of the X-ray pulsed emission from the 16 ms pulsar PSR J0537−6910 in the energy range 0.1–30 keV, based on archival BeppoSAX and RossiXTE observations. This pulsar, discovered by Marshall et al. [1] in the LMC field with RXTE, is the fastest spinning pulsar associated with a supernova remnant. It is characteriz...
متن کاملTiming of the Young Pulsar in 3 C 58
PSR J0205+6449 is a young pulsar in the Crab-like pulsar wind nebula 3C 58 which is thought to be a result of the historical supernova SN1181 CE. The 65.7-ms pulsar is the second most energetic of the known Galactic pulsars and has been shown to be remarkably cool for its age, implying non-standard cooling processes in the neutron star core. We report on RXTE timing observations taken during AO...
متن کاملDiscovery of an Ultra-fast X-ray Pulsar in the Supernova Remnant N157B
We present the serendipitous discovery of 16 ms pulsed X-ray emission from the Crab-like supernova remnant N157B in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This is the fastest spinning pulsar associated with a supernova remnant (SNR). Observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), centered on the field containing SN1987A, reveal an X-ray pulsar with a narrow pulse profile. Archival ASCA X-ray da...
